Fuel Efficiency Myths: What Actually Works for Better MPG

Myth #1: Premium gas makes your car run better
Unless your owner’s manual specifically requires premium fuel, you’re wasting money. Most modern engines are designed to run efficiently on regular unleaded. Premium won’t clean your engine or boost performance — it just costs more.

Myth #2: You get more fuel if you fill up early in the morning
The idea is that colder fuel is denser, so you get more per gallon. But gas pumps are temperature-compensated — meaning the volume adjusts automatically. You’ll get the same amount of energy per gallon at 7 a.m. as you will at 3 p.m.

Myth #3: Letting your car idle warms it up faster in winter
Not true. Modern engines warm up best while being driven gently, not idling in the driveway. Excessive idling just burns fuel and can foul spark plugs and sensors over time.

Myth #4: Fuel additives improve mileage instantly
Most “miracle” additives don’t live up to the hype. Quality fuels already contain detergents and cleaners that protect injectors and valves. The best additive is regular maintenance — not a bottle from the gas station shelf.

What Actually Improves Fuel Economy

1. Keep your tires properly inflated.
Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, lowering fuel economy by up to 3%. Check your pressure monthly — especially when temperatures change.

2. Replace air filters and spark plugs on schedule.
A clogged filter or worn plug makes your engine work harder and burn more fuel. Small fixes here can boost efficiency by 5–10%.

3. Use the right motor oil.
Manufacturer-recommended oil helps your engine operate with less friction. Using the wrong viscosity (especially one that’s too thick) reduces MPG and performance.

4. Lighten your load.
An extra 100 pounds in your trunk can reduce MPG by about 1%. Remove unnecessary items and roof racks when not in use.

5. Drive smarter.
Smooth acceleration, steady cruising, and anticipating stops can improve fuel efficiency by up to 30%. Quick starts and hard braking waste energy.

6. Get regular tune-ups.
A healthy engine burns fuel efficiently. Regular inspections catch problems like failing oxygen sensors or dirty injectors before they drain your wallet.

The Nashville Reality

Between stop-and-go traffic, hills, and Tennessee’s summer heat, local driving conditions can hurt efficiency more than most realize. That’s why keeping your car in top mechanical shape is the single most effective way to stretch every gallon.
